VS - At first, I’m afraid I’ve got to start with a real basic question just because I’d like to know how you came up with this QUILLS project. So free time between two festivals ?
Evan - -Myself and Danny have been trying to do a project like this for years, we just haven't had the right opportunity until now. We were lucky enough to hook up with our Chris and Jason to do Quills because they are both awesome musicians and know this style of music.
VS - Some of your band mates are more or less well known musicians. I wonder if you have the same kind of background they have.
Evan - -I don't have much of a background as far as being in a band goes. I've jammed with a few bands throughout the years from the area, but nothing has developed fully to recording and such as it did with Quills.
VS - How did you get this deal with Galy records ? An american label like Anarchos records or Relapse would have been a more logical choice except if you have the feeling QUILLS isn’t a typical american band? Do you ? (and if yes why?)
Evan - -We were able to make the deal with Galy mainly through Jason's contact with them, as he is good friends with those guys. We are a very new band, so we were lucky to get picked up by them regardless. Not too many people have heard of us before this EP. I don't know if I would consider us to be an American type band, but that didn't have anything to do with what label we went with.
QUILLS’s taking some of its roots in grindcore, Hardcore, metal…even punk and crust. There’s some obvious old school influences in your music but the result is definatly actual. What’s the secret behind this ?
Evan - -We have all been influenced by bands in all the above genres, so the result ended up using elements from each. We were definitely shooting to have an old school grindcore/hardcore feel.
VS - How long did it take to compose and record this mini cd you have. That’s a short release and there’s a king of emergency, something really spontaneous in the final result. Was it exactly what you had in mind when you thought about this project ?
Evan - It's hard to say exactly how long it really took, because having two guys in the band who are in other full-time bands made it hard to get it done quite as quickly as it would have been otherwise. But overall it only took a couple months, and we recorded it after only playing one or two shows.
VS - Tell me about this live experience you had during the last Maryland Deathfest. I guess that’s not a small deal to leave your promotors cap for an hour to reach the stage…
Evan - It was very tiring to do both, but it worked out pretty well. When we played, I was running on very little sleep and a lot of stress, but overall I was happy with how it went. Since we were opening the fest on the second day, I wasn't way too busy with fest stuff at that time so it wasn't hard for me to jump on stage for a few minutes.
VS - Most people, including me, are curious to know if you plan to record a full album with QUILLS. So ?
Evan - I hope so. I think we will, it's basically a matter of time. Both Misery Index and Ruiner are doing some serious touring right now, so it may not happen anytime soon. But if they take a break at some point in the next year sometime, then we'll try to bust out a full-length.
VS - Any other live performance in plans ?
Evan - The only show we have coming up is the Circle Pit fest on December 1st in Baltimore. It's the day before the Auditory Assault fest that I'm doing. I don't know if Jason will be there with us for this performance, but we will play regardless since we haven't played at all since the fest in May.
Il ne vous reste plus qu'à jetter une oreille sur ce mini cd de QUILLS. 6 minutes ça sera court pour tenir jusqu'à l'album. La touche "repeat " sera, pour une fois, utile.
