Daniel Corchado (chant/guitare) - THE CHASM par TONTON - 1680 lectures

VS : Here we go for some questions... let's start with a basic one, ok ? Well at first, could you please introduce the band to our readers ?
Daniel : man, that is a long one...I'll try to be brief...We have been active and procreaing metal since late 1992,when we formed the band in Mexico city...after i quit from my former band CENOTAPH I decided to continue my search for the ultimate goal:to keep satisfying myself with the creations of pure death hymns,we have been playing for almost 12 years, and so far we have released 1 demotape, 6 full lenghts and one mcd....
more info can be found at the website www.enterthedeathcult.com
ours is kinda a long history...

VS : THE CHASM is famous on the underground scene but due to a bad distribution, your name isn't that well known in Europe ; how did you get this deal with Wicked world ? Do you think the gods of metal were on your side the day you signed on this label ?
Daniel : probably,I mean, after all this yeasr of struggle and being in the deepest of the UG,it finally came true,to be signed by a real label,I think that the main reason we ended up signing w/WW is that they really liked and understood the music,Dan got in touch with us after he saw over the internet that we self released a MCD back in 2001, I guess he really liked ''Procession to the infraworld''....
He was interested in our new material, just as a fan,he didn't mention that he worked for earache, after I sent the mcd we kept in touch for a while, and I think he realized that even if we were in a difficult situation ,with no real label support we were still active and completely dedicated to do our thing. Almost a year after I sent him ''conjuration…'' (2003) things started to get more serious and oriented about being signed by them,so finally after several months of emails , we inked the deal in the summer of 2003 ,it was a long negotiation, but it finally happened...

VS : A long negociation ? Were you too expensive for the label ?
Daniel : haha,i wish
nah,it's just that I think they were really thinking about this. As I said, we are so undergorund , that our sales are not the best in the world. I mean, in the end, for them is a business, no business owner wnats to risk his own $$

VS : The fact is, the situation isn't that good for labels over Europe. That's not a small business signing an underground band like yours...
Daniel : maybe, but yes,I guess we are kinda :"small" for a label like this,in terms of being recognized adn sell records, but in the other hand, they proved that they didn't gave a shit about it, they signe dus 'coz of the music, nothing else...which I think is really outstanding...It gaves hope...

VS : Did you think about your band's freedom when you signed the deal ? I mean that's a fantastic opportunity for a band like yours, but on the other hand, don't you think money can have a negative impact on music ?
Daniel : it is possible...for others but not for the chasm,we have been doing this for so long, our convictions are firmly rooted and solid, money is just a thing that comes and goes but the satisfaction to fulfill our own souls with this music goes beyond that. And serioulsy,I don't think we are gonna sell a mega quantity of records...

VS : I'm sorry but I'm gonna do my best to help in this matter
Daniel : haha,great!
That's appreciated , I mean , we all can use some extra $$ but that doesn't mean that money will change our personality, specially at this stage...it would be relly stupid and false from us...
Fuck that, this music goes beyond that...The feeling and creation of extreme songs is very respected artistic representation for us. Real Metal is about power and glory, pride and wisdom, talent and honor...

VS : Actually I have the feeling you've got a real respect for your music but also for the listeners ? Don't you think the big problem in actual death metal is this lack of respect ?
Daniel : not only in Death Metal, but life in general, yes if people where more focused and probaly show more respect and appreciation towards a lot fo things ,we may be living in a non-so-sick-stupid-society
Of course we respect our followers,we know that our style is not easy to digest, and we really appreciate those who have paid attention to our music and have understood our crusade,we respect that a lot.

VS : let's talk about the Spell album...Did you start composing before you signed this deal ? Did it change something in your mind ? I guess it was a relief on the recording cost but did you feel any pressure ? After all, you were working on an album with
Daniel : yes it was a little bit more stressing,as you said, this one was gonna be everywhere....we did a few songs before we signed the deal, skeletons of things to come, but I really believe that even if the deal didn't happened, our purpose would be the same : to create the most crushing album in our career. It has always been like that. We have to really impress ourselves so to speak,we have to create something very unique everytime we do a new song. It would be pointless to do something just for "fun" or as a "hobby". In the other hand maybe subcounsciously we knew that we have this unique chance to show a lot of people the power of the band and this maybe had an effect in the creation of the new hymns...

VS :... areYOU impressed with the final result ? Do you think you'll be able to record a better album next time ?
Daniel : more than impressed,I'm totally satisfied and proud, it feels great when you accomplish something like this... And if we don't do a better album next time, then is time to rest in peace...

VS : don't worry... If the next one isn't at least as good, I'll let you know
Daniel : haha,ok. I'll trust you

VS : you can. Ok now, I'd like to know more about your composing process...
Daniel : ok

VS : There are so many guitar parts in each of your songs, I have the feeling you're working in the same way OPETH does in another style. Am I right ?
Daniel : mmm about OPETH, I dunno, maybe the 'progressive factor' is very present in them as well as in us. Progressive music for me is one that has many textures, and layers and structures. It's something we really want to do with THE CHASM but in the more dark/metallish context, like for example "Manifest my intervention" was called the "progressive/Thrash Overture" before I put the title
I think that in order to accomplish our visions, you know, to create images with the music,a lot of variety is needed. In this case, all the guitar parts, joined with the drum patterns, they make a different dimension for us...

VS : well the different dimensional aspect is a persistent thought when people are listening "The spell..." Is this something you're working hard on ? To reach a kinda spiritual step ? (I don't know if I'm really clear...)
Daniel : I know what you mean...
Yes it's hard to accomplish, because for us to play this music goes beyond the simple riff/chorus/blast beat. For us metal is a symbol of power, strenght, victory and honor is something that we feel as a true force. We belive that it has to be done with a lot of passion, feeling and brains...
For us every album is like a trip or journey. It is something very intimate . We write music from deep inside and we believe in creating this dimensions and atmospheres to take the listener to a different place...So many shit has gone wrong in metal. A lot of this essence has been lost . It is our duty to carry on with the tradition of the old masters.

VS : …Latino blood is speaking...
Daniel : Yes, latin american people are kinda passionate about what they do, or how they feel and see things, even if it's something stupid (for us), like religion. They really go deep into it. I dunno if that's strange, but I guess it is really true...

VS : When you're talking like this, I have the feeling you put A LOT of yourself in your music. Don't you ever feel sort of empty each time you release a new album ? Like a father seeing his kids leaving home...Is there a kind of sadness in this part of t
Daniel : it's strange, but somehow what you say is true, after a long, exhausting process, when we finish an album, it's like an era has ended. A phase of my life is gone. Sure, I enjoy the new product, the recorded version, but the stress and effort takes a lot of our persona, it's very demanding, in the end. We are satisfied, but we know that sooner or later we'll have to start all over again, the quest to find... the ultimate vision...

VS : in fact one’s best album is always the next one...
Daniel : indeed,,,
it has to be...
if not, what is the point ? Right?

VS : of course...I didn't have the opportunity to read your lyrics but it seems you're very close to your Mexican roots. Is this a part of the "dimension process" ?
Daniel : somehow. The ancient aztec culture gave me a lot of inspiration for the "search" of my inner self
as well as the other side.

VS : what about the feedback you've received with "The Spell...". Do you have the feeling Latin Americans are more sensitive to your style than others ?
Daniel : well, it's strange , but it seems that some south american countries are getting too much into the european styles. And some european countries are getting more into the exotic/latin american style. I haven't read any review from south america yet...it's hard to say but I believe that any one from any part of the world, if they look for something kinda different and done with heart, they may like and get into the spell…

VS : Do you have the feeling Europeans really see your band as an exotic one ? I mean, except for the lyrics, you guys are not sounding as a mexican band.
Daniel : I agree, but a lot of people from europe seem to be very into our sound, probably not because we are so exoctic/sounding, but mainly because we are keeping this tradition, that I think a of people over there seem to be looking for : some of the traditional values of Metal, real Honest metal...We play from the heart, and I guess it really shows in our music, maybe some are very identified with it...

VS : and I guess that's working pretty well for you...
Daniel : I can't complain, it's great when you find a person who really understands our concept and sound...

VS : Ok let’s talk about this upcoming tour with INCANTATION. You're leaving in a week... How many shows are you supposed to play ?
Daniel : we have 10 shows ready to go...

VS : that's a small one…
Daniel : yes, it's like a test/warm up for us. That's the way the promoter did it, so...we'll see how it goes

VS : what about your live performance ? Is that easy to play your kind of metal on stage ? I mean the spiritual meanings are the key of your music…Is that also working on stage ?
Daniel : This tour really means to us, it's the very first time, ever, that THE CHASM is gonna tour, here or in any other part...Now for the technical difficulty, yes, it is indeed hard to play on stage, but it's something that we know. We practice hard to do it right...I think that the band has a more aggressive/direct aura on stage than on the recordings, we get a good aura/atmosphere, but is more crude and destructive, since we are live, in front of people. There are more primal emotions involved...rougher and uglier, so to speak...

VS : ...more right in the face...
Daniel : exactly

VS : any news about an upcoming tour in Europe ? Maybe after this test ?
Daniel : not yet, still waiting for a response....Hopefullt this mini tour is the beginning of a new era for us, a touring one...I really cannot wait to go to europe, but I know is hard to do...

VS : you can't imagine... Just before giving an end to this talk...I wanna know the kind of stuff you're listening actually
Daniel : ok...let's see...In the last month I've been listening to:
UNIVERS ZERO
your compadres MAGMA

VS : MAGMA ? I guess you particulary enjoy the original and progressive vibe from Christian Vander's band
Daniel : Yes, totally
the ALEXANDER soundtrack
SEMIRAMIS

VS : at last : the last question.. a silly one to finish...
Daniel : hahaha ot really...made by himself, maybe...
let's see..."He died for Metal, and Lived for Death"
there you go

VS : Great !!! Ok, Daniel it's time for me to stop bothering you with my questions. Any last comments ?
Daniel : Just that I really apprecite your help and belief. Seriously, it's great to see you got into our sound...
That's cool, when you find someone who knows the old school ways...and likes THE CHASM. They are very scarce

VS : I hope you'll realise there's more people into your sound than you are expecting…
